The Greenhouse Effect
The Greenhouse Effect is a process where infra-red rays from the sun penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere traps these rays (like the glass in a greenhouse) keeping the Earth warm.
However, industrial processes and car emissions are emitting increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) nitrous oxide (NO2) and methane (CH4) in the atmosphere, causing more heat to be trapped and contributing to global warming. [dti.gov.uk] |

Environmental Facts
- More than half of Europe's plant species will be at threat or classified as vulnerable by 2080 as a consequence of global warming.
- It took 2 billion years for microbial life to create our oxygen rich atmosphere from a CO2 rich atmosphere In only 200 years we have managed to tip the balance.
- The amount of raw pollutant produced by your boiler every year is equivalent to a tipper truck unloading half a ton of soot on your driveway.
- Scientists predict that global temperatures will rise by between 1.4oC and 5.8oC by the end of this century.
- Global warming will cause 95% of lifeforms in the oceans to become extinct, along with about three-quarters of land species.
- More than half of Europe's plant species will be at threat or classified as vulnerable by 2080 as a consequence of global warming.
- As a result of Global Warming we will see an increase in sea levels and extreme weather like storms, floods and droughts in the UK and across the rest of the world.
